Maysville rallies late for win

The Maysville Lady Warriors rallied from eight points down in the fourth quarter rallying for a 43-40 win over Fox in an elimination game in the Big 8 Tournament in Wayne Wednesday night. A 14-4 run erased the deficit and free throws down the stretch gave the Lady Warriors to their first win of the season.

The decisive run was led by Macey Hatfield who had seven points with Shelbi Sharber and Kortney Holbert adding four each.

The game was tight early on but a 10 -0 run by Maysville to start the second quarter gave the Lady Warriors their first lead of the game at 15-9. It was Sharber and Hatfield that paced the run with four points each.

Fox rallied and kept the game close the rest of the quarter but the Lady Warriors held an 18-16 lead heading into the break.

Maysville went cold to start the second half going six minutes without a basket. Fox took advantage with a 10-0 run as Anissa McConnell scored four points. Four straight points at the end of the third quarter by Maysville cut the lead to 26-22 heading into the final eight minutes.

Fox scored six straight points in the first minute of the fourth quarter to open up an eight point lead. Maysville would respond with six straight points. Fox’s leading scorers Caity Spigner and Keyanndra Young would foul out during the early part of the fourth quarter opening the door for the Lady Warriors.

Fox would put a little cushion between them and Maysville opening up a six point led with five minutes remaining.

The Lady Warriors would extend their defensive pressure and within a 20 second span had tied the game. Add another 30 seconds to the time and Hatfield’s jumper would give Maysville the lead.

It became a free throw fest down the stretch. Fox would go to the line eight times hitting only three. Maysville would go to the 14 times hitting six attempts and pulling out a three point win.

Hatfield led the three Lady Warriors in double figures with 15. Sharber added 13 and Holbert 12.

Spigner led all scorers with 16 for the Foxes.

Maysville advances to face Elmore City-Pernell in the consolation finals on Friday night.

    The Big 12 released its conference schedule and the Cowboys set their season schedule on Tuesday after West Virginia University officially joined the conference for the 2012 season.
