Popcorn payoff big for PV scouts

Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — Bags and bags of popcorn will have a payoff in a big way for dozens of boys taking part in the Cub Scouts here in Pauls Valley.

The popcorn is at the center of an annual fundraiser meant to help a number of young boys take part in a variety of activities this year for Pack 73 of the PV Cub Scouts.

The boys ranging in age from 6 to 12 years old recently wrapped up a door-to-door campaign to raise money as they prepare to head off into the adventures of the 2013 year.

Pack leader Bill McAngus says the fundraiser is a much needed thing as the boys get ready for the whole year.

“We do this fundraiser one time a year,” McAngus said.

“It usually starts in September, and we pretty much do it for a few weeks. The boys have been going around selling Trails End popcorn,” he said, referring to a brand name of popcorn products.

The boys were selling about 15 different items, such as microwave popcorn, caramel corn with nuts, white chocolate pretzels and various flavors of just good old fashioned popcorn.

With the top sellers earning prizes, members of the local Cub Scout pack wound up selling more than $16,000 worth during the fundraiser.

Those top sellers include Curtis Berry in first place, Matthew McAngus in second and Graham Readnour in third.

Money raised through the annual campaign will now go to help pay for a variety of Cub Scout activities during the new year.

“These funds help to pay for a family pack camp, which has been at Longmire (Lake) the last couple of years,” McAngus said about a camp that includes the boys’ families. “The activities we do out there are things like shooting BB guns and archery.

“It also pays for the next year’s dues and a Scout book for each boy,” he said, adding the fundraising push does represent a big benefit for many of the Scout families.

The popcorn fundraiser also helps the boys with the annual Pinewood Derby, which is scheduled for March 9 at the local Reynolds Recreation Center.

Then on April 26-27 the local Scouts will head back to the great outdoors at Camp Simpson near Tishomingo.

With the Boy Scouts level being the next step, McAngus says things are going really well for this local pack of Cub Scouts.

“We have about 78 boys now,” he said.

“We’ve had pretty good recruiting, and now we have a pretty good crew.”
