Keeping holiday spirit on the move

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — The recent holiday season might be over but volunteers are still needed to help tuck things away for another year, while some will also turn an eye to the spirit of Pauls Valley’s Christmas future.

Anyone and everyone is invited to join in and help take down the festive lights and decorations in the downtown area starting at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19. Volunteers are asked to meet at the train depot.

With this weekend’s event meant to wrap up this past holiday a new group is also being formed to look at the possibilities for upcoming Christmas seasons in PV.

Local tourism director Erin Creach said a new committee will look at what things can be added to the holiday lights now being offered in Pauls Valley, such as those displayed in the downtown.

Step one appears to be a closer look at the possibility of bringing Christmas lights to the local Wacker Park with a special holiday drive through.

“I’ve got some great ideas for this,” Creach said.

“I am ready to get this process started, so I decided to form a committee. The purpose of this committee is to look at what opportunities are there,” she said, referring to the PV park.

“Right now we’ll be looking at lights being out there and what we need to do to make it fall into place.”

Along with the lights, Creach said they will consider things like horse-drawn carriages and any number of holiday related activities.

For Creach she remembers as a child her family going to Turner Falls near Davis each Christmas to drive through the special holiday light displays there.

Similar holiday displays are also featured today in nearby places like Chickasha, Purcell and Ardmore.

That’s where Creach decided to get things going by speaking with officials in each of those cities to get some tips and more information about these popular events offered to the general public each Christmas season.

Those people being invited to join the new holiday committee here have some expertise in parks and lighting, according to Creach. The committee’s first meeting is scheduled for next week.

She added local businesses and civic clubs could at some point be invited to join the process.

“We know the depot lights are up during the holidays and people come to see it,” Creach said.

“We want to add to that,” she said. “I think it would be fun to have drive through lights in Wacker Park.

“The possibilities are endless. We just want to look at what’s possible and what we need to do to make it happen.”
