Butts breaks out of slump with grand slam vs LG

marie@pvdemocrat.com — Pauls Valley freshman Tyler Butts had been in a slump for several games. The lefty came to the plate Friday in the seventh inning with seven strikeouts in his last eight at bats over a three game stretch.

With the bases loaded and PV and Lone Grove tied at six, Butts broke out of his slump. Butts got all of a 1-0 pitch and hit it a mile over the right field fence for a walk off grand slam and the Panthers fourth home run of the day.

Ty Knight bounced back from Tuesday’s loss on the diamond with seven strong innings of work. The fireball righty gave up six runs on 9 hits. He struck out 7 and walked 8.

Lone Grove got on the board in the first with a run.

The Panthers responded in the bottom of the second with Daniel Brown hitting a line shot over the left field wall tieing the game at 1-1.

The Longhorns regained the lead in the third as Henson doubled and scored on Stewart’s single.

Pauls Valley took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth Flores singled, his fourth hit of the day, to start the inning. Brown was hit with a pitch and Treston Williams advanced both runners 90-feet with a ground out.

Austin Foxworth then singled home both runners as PV took a 3-2 lead.

Knight reached on an error in the fifth. O’Bryant advanced him to second on a sacrifice bunt. Flores doubled him home as PV took a 4-2 lead.

The lead would hold up until the seventh when Lone Grove scored four runs. A hit by pitch and three base on balls scored one run and a two out single cleared the bases as LG took a 6-4 lead.

Drake O’Bryant doubled for Pauls Valley in the bottom of the seventh. Flores then connected with an 0-1 pitch sending the ball sailing over the left field fence to tie the game at 6-6.

Brown then reached on an error and Ward singled to put runners at the corners.

A walk to Foxworth loaded the base for Butts. Butts got the pitch he liked and sent it sailing for a walk off grand slam a 10-6 win.

For the second straight game Flores led the offense with three hits. Brown and Foxworth both had two hits each for the Panthers who moved to 8-1 on the year.

The Panthers will return to action Thursday in the PV Invitational.
