Final pieces coming together for PV recycling

emann@pvdemocrat.com — The carefully laid plans for Pauls Valley's community recycling center continue to roll toward an appropriate opening on Earth Day on Monday, April 22.

Helping the committee behind it all breathe a little bit easier is the realization that not only is the project shy of just a few thousand dollars and set to see the first walls go up in a matter of days, but how they keep finding new ways to involve area residents.

It was at the most recent recycling meeting where it was determined that hiring a welder to help put the structure together was just around the corner and thanks to other contributions, some of the concrete has already been poured.

In fact, a sign near the spot along South Walnut Street next to Valley Farmers Market can be seen promoting the coming attraction.

“We're at a point where we can start erecting this thing,” said Chip Pearson, a representative of the Garvin County Community Living Center, which has partnered with the city to make the center possible.

“It's going to be productive because we put that drop dead date of April 22. We've been talking about it a long time.”

Collecting some of the first checks, which add up to about $7,000, is expected to begin this week.

Keeping it all tax deductible in the meantime is another established area cause, the PV Community Foundation, which is where all checks are being written to.

There is still a plea going out to secure the rest of the needed funds with no donation too small from residents or businesses. Some of the larger donations are already expected to be honored with permanent recognition once the center opens.

A few of the plans that will further involve the community include an idea by those like Committee Vice Chair Jesse Alvarado, who noted kids in town could help design the recycling center logo in a contest.

Chair of the committee, Tye Jacobson, later added how other images kids create could even be rotated out on a monthly basis and the plan is to try and have a kid designed logo picked by the second week in March.

In the end, Erin Babcock, secretary for the committee, noted that the ultimate goal is to promote a reduction of waste with the 10 bins that will be set aside for items from paper and cardboard to metal and plastic bottles.

When asked, City Manager James Frizell noted that it would be feasible to eventually begin recycle pick up at home on a designated day after weighing logistics, and residents should expect to see leaflets with their water bills discussing how they can be a part of the cause.

There is even a plan to participate in events and spread the word at environmentally friendly events like the Trash of Parade on April 6 and the Trash-In-Fashion show on April 26.

“I think it's best if we try our best to reduce the amount of disposables we create,” said Babcock.
