Better shred than be sorry

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — This time around the public is invited to make a mess as an Elmore City bank is looking to shred stuff in the name of protecting what’s really important.

It’s called Shred-A-Thon as the First State Bank in EC is giving those living in the area a chance to safely dispose of those old papers that include sensitive, personal information.

The one-day shredding is scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 6 and continue until 1 p.m. that afternoon.

It all takes place at the bank, located at 206 South Main in Elmore City.

“We’ll have two big semi’s with shredders,” said Misty Howard of the bank.

“This is for any documents, old fax paper, any records they need to dispose of,” she said.

“You don’t have to be a customer of the bank. This is for everybody — businesses and individuals.”

The EC bank did a similar but smaller event last year.

A decision was made to have an even bigger shredding event and “invite the surrounding area.”

It’s pretty simple for those interested in taking part. All they have to do is gather up all the paper items they want shredded and show up at the EC bank during the three-hour period on April 6.

The items will be shredded on-site as the bank is teaming up with Rite-Way Shredding to provide the services.

“It will all be shredded and then recycled.”

The shredding and recycling is helpful in creating less waste for landfills. It does allow people to dispose of these documents properly and safely.

However, the big issue here is to disposal of things like old tax returns, bank statements and any personal and confidential documents as a way of keeping the information on them safe.

In the wrong hands the information can potentially lead to a number of bad things, such as the theft of a person’s identification.

“We’re trying to help keep people’s identification safe,” Howard said. “That’s why we’re providing this service.”
