Play time for 4-H kids

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — It’s play time for both kids and their families as this weekend a Garvin County group hosts the first of a trio of planned fundraisers.

The group is the county’s 4-H horse club, and the event is an open playday set for Saturday, March 16 at the Pauls Valley Round-Up Club Rodeo Arena.

One 4-H parent, Melani Kemp of Elmore City, says the playday is meant to raise some money to help kids in the club, while also having some fun during what should be an all day event.

“It’s just for the kids and their families to have fun,” Kemp said.

“This is open to anyone,” she said. “Since this is for the kids anybody can come regardless of age. We invite the public to just come out and watch.”

As for the fundraising, all proceeds from the rider fees and concession stand go to the county 4-H horse group.

“All the proceeds go to help the 4-H kids,” Kemp said, adding it helps the youngsters take part is such activities as trail rides and parades.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. with the playday action getting started around 9 a.m.

Age groups for riders are up to 6 years old, 7 to 12, 13 to 17 and 18 and up.

Timed events for the open playday include:

• barrel racing.

• flags - three barrels with a flag in the middle, riders retrieve the flag and take it to one of the other barrels.

• poles - riders weave their horses in between a series of poles.

• stakes - a figure eight on horseback.

• keyhole - taking the horse in a 360 degree maneuver.

There will be two winners from each age group.

The cost for riders is $5 per event or $20 for all day, while a concession stand is open to the public.

Last year the club held one open playday event. This year there are three planned at the rodeo arena in Pauls Valley with the next two set for April 20 and June 1.

Kemp says the events are turning into a buckle series.

For all three playday events combined the fastest overall first and second place finishers will be awarded buckles.

Helping meet a need

Acting as an example of the kindness that has resulted from a request for donations from Main Street Pauls Valley, local resident Holley Sanders is seen here helping carry supplies along with Paramedic John Stegall to her truck earlier this morning. EMS through Pauls Valley General Hospital is another local organization that has helped gather items and take it to the Main Street Office at the corner of Paul and Walnut Streets. "Two friends of mine lost their homes and I felt for them," said Sanders, who is among those who have offered to take items to a drop off site in Norman. "I wanted to do something."
