Third quarter dooms Lady Panthers

marie@pvdemocrat.com — A bad third quarter cost the Pauls Valley Lady Panthers a shot at their first victory Tuesday night as they lost a 60-45 battle with Blanchard at the Panther Gymnasium.

It took Pauls Valley nearly the entire third quarter to score and finished with only four points. Blanchard on the other hand blew open the game outscoring PV by 15 points in the quarter and opening up a 13-point lead. That would be all the Lady Lions would need as they won by 15 points.

The game was back-and-forth early before Pauls Valley jumped up by six in the middle of the second quarter. PV built the lead to seven points late in the quarter but Blanchard scored five in the final six seconds to cut the lead to two at the break.

Chreykee Humphrey was 3-of-3 from beyond the arc in the quarter to help Pauls Valley build that lead.

Sparked by the five late points, Blanchard came out hot in the second half. They quickly erased the remaining deficit and midway through the quarter had a 10-point lead. Charity Trammell finally ended the Blanchard run with a basket and later hit two free throws for the only points in the quarter.

Ray had 10 points in the quarter for Blanchard and proved to be the difference maker all night for the Lady Lions.

Pauls Valley finally got back on track in the fourth quarter behind Veronica Alvarado’s offense. The senior had 10 points in the quarter as PV was able to cut the lead to six at one-point in the final quarter. But Ray had an answer for Blanchard scoring 10 points in the fourth quarter to finish with a game high 32.

The Lady Lions kept Pauls Valley from making a final run and pulled away for a 15-point win.

Blanchard was 11-of-13 in the fourth quarter from the stripe and finished 24-of-38 from the line in the game. Pauls Valley went to the free throw line 23 times in the foul infested game and they knocked down 16 of their tries.

Pauls Valley opens up play in the Charles K. Heatly Classic Thursday morning against St. Mary’s.
