Pursuit charges net second teen

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — One more suspect has been formally connected to a high speed chase throughout parts of Pauls Valley right before the recent Christmas holiday.

A total of three felony charges have been filed against 19-year-old Luke Austin Smith making him the second teenager to be charged in the case.

Late last month similar charges were filed against Ricky Michael Deaton Williamson, 18.

Both teens are alleged to have been in the car that led a PV police officer on a high flying and potentially dangerous pursuit on Dec. 22 as speeds were reported to at times be in the 100 mph range.

This week Smith made his first courtroom appearance on the trio of charges, which include endangering others while eluding a police officer, running a roadblock and the unauthorized use of a vehicle.

Williamson was first suspected and later admitted to being the driver of the pursued vehicle, while Smith is now formally accused of being in the car during the chase.

Last month’s pursuit began when a PV police officer attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding.

Not only did the vehicle fail to stop it once went off the roadway at nearby Indian Meridian before speeding through a number of intersections starting with one near Royal Oaks on the west side of PV.

The driver then took the vehicle through a stop sign and directly in front of a westbound tractor truck almost causing a collision on Airline Road in a southern part of PV.

When the vehicle made its way to West Avenue and continued northbound it got through a roadblock set up at the Fields Row intersection.

Speeds then reached triple digits for the fleeing vehicle as it traveled westbound on Royal Oaks. As it returned to the Indian Meridian intersection the vehicle at one point went airborne as sparks were observed when the car came back down to the roadway.

A short time later the vehicle was found abandoned on a county road a few miles west of Pauls Valley.

Among the things found in the vehicle were an amount of marijuana and a driver’s license, which ultimately led authorities to both Smith and Williamson.
