Be ready for severe storms

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — One Garvin County official is reminding residents here that with spring on the way it’s a good idea to be ready for the possibility of severe weather.

With that in mind this county’s emergency management director, Bud Ramming, is stepping in to play a big role in an upcoming event in nearby Ardmore for first-responder and the public in general.

The event is called Severe Weather Awareness Disaster Preparedness Day scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 16 at the Ardmore Convention Center, 2401 North Rockford.

“I’m helping Love and Carter counties with this,” Ramming said.

“We’re one of the sponsoring agencies for this.”

One of the event’s features is a storm spotter training class at 10:30 a.m.

Ramming said for anyone interested in learning more about storm spotting this is the place to be.

“Some people don’t know what a wall cloud looks like,” he said, referring to a severe and possibly tornadic weather system.

“If people want to know more about storm spotting, just show up.”

The main thing about this gathering is to help people be prepared for severe weather and the possibility of a disaster striking.

That means more information about how to develop an emergency kit, fire safety, weather radio programming and coming up with your own emergency plans way before the time is needed.

“If people don’t know where to go for a severe storm, they need to know before it gets here,” Ramming said.

“They need to know now.”

Along with various agencies from southern Oklahoma, other sponsors include the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, National Weather Service, Oklahoma Homeland Security and the Oklahoma Baptist Disaster Relief just to name a few.
