Race car film scenes a real discovery

TV crew makes pit stop in Pauls Valley

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — The volume was turned up in a big way for some Pauls Valley residents when crews with a national television network were in town filming some scenes.

Filming this past weekend at PV’s municipal airport were crews with the Discovery Channel.

Only bits and pieces are known so far about the specifics of the scenes or how they fit into a show being done for the network.

“I don’t exactly what they’re doing,” said airport manager Craig Carson. “It’s like a docu-reality show.”

A Discovery Channel crew numbering in the triple figures was in Pauls Valley filming at the local airport throughout parts of Sunday night.

At the center of the stop were various cars used to film scenes depicting racing.

“It’s a chase scene that starts in Oklahoma City and goes south to Dallas,” Carson said, adding other scenes were filed at airports near the Interstate 35 corridor, including El Reno just a couple of weeks earlier.

“They were using old muscle cars and filming the scene on the airport’s taxi way,” he said.

“They needed about a quarter mile of track but we were able to give them a half mile.”

An estimated 200 to 300 people were at the PV airport to film the various race scenes with the “souped up” cars.

“They filmed six or seven drag races between these cars.”

Carson added there were six cars representing Oklahoma and another half-dozen for Texas.

“They wanted to be as discrete as possible,” Carson said.

“They lit this place up out here. Half the town probably heard it but didn’t know what it was.

“It’s kind of a neat thing to happen here in Pauls Valley. This is good for Pauls Valley. I hope we get some positive exposure from it.”

According to the airport manager, all the action here was part of a Pilgrim Productions show that will air at some point in the future on the Discovery Channel.

He also believes it will be part of some sort of series with eight one-hour segments.

“What they did here in Pauls Valley will be one of those hours.”
