Doris Rhodes

Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — Doris Rhodes of Pauls Valley passed away January 20, 2013 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at the age of 81 years.

She was born April 2, 1931 in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma to Clifford G. and Iva Owens.

Doris Owens was married to Ray Rhodes in Pauls Valley on April 6, 1949. She worked at the Pauls Valley General Hospital in administration for 48 years from 1948 until her retirement in 1996. Pauls Valley has been her home all of her life.

After retiring from Pauls Valley General Hospital, Doris became an avid Panther fan. She and Ray followed the football, basketball and baseball team everywhere they played. No matter how far, they traveled and supported the team.

Although Doris had no children of her own, she became a second mother to several kids throughout the years. She opened her home and her heart to kids who loved her for it. She had a family that grew throughout her life as she found new people to care for until the day she passed.

Nothing made her more proud than being a grandmother to Kathryn and Nathan in her later years. She spent countless days sitting in the driveway watching them ride their bikes around the circle drive.

She enjoyed seeing all of her “kids” succeed and sharing those moments with them. Her love and generosity will be missed by all those who she adopted as hers.

She was preceded in death by husband, Ray Rhodes; brothers Sonny Owens and Bill Owens; sisters Lorene Whitaker, Hazel Whitaker, Viola Watson, and Ruby Dunn; and special friend Brenda Harred.

Surviving family include her sister, Mary Chronister of Wynnewood; brother, Jerry Owens and wife Cynthia of Pauls Valley; brother-in-law, Bill and Wauthena Rhodes of Wynnewood; sister-in-law, Vivian Crawford of Pauls Valley; sister-in-law, Geneva Bare of Oregon; a nephew, Chad and Alaina Chronister; great niece and nephew, Kathryn and Nathan Chronister, all of Pauls Valley; and a host of other nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Interment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery under the direction of Stufflebean-Coffey Funeral Home.

We invite you to send a message of condolence and view the family's guestbook at www.stufflebeanfuneralhome.com.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent in Doris Rhodes' name to the Nazih Zuhdi Transplant Institute, Integris Baptist Medical Center at 3030 N. W. Expressway in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, 73112; or on-line at www.integris-health.com/INTEGRIS/en-US/CharitableGiving/
