Livestock show a good practice run

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — One area livestock show is set for this weekend, while one here in Pauls Valley will come just before a big upcoming county event.

Elmore City’s junior livestock show is set for Saturday, Feb. 16.

Pauls Valley and Whitebead students in FFA and 4-H get their chance at a local show scheduled for the following Saturday, Feb. 23.

In Elmore City the livestock show this Saturday will begin at 2 p.m. at the school’s ag barn.

Elmore City-Pernell FFA advisor Greg Sharber says it’s good to get the kids out there with the animals before the county livestock show later this month in Pauls Valley.

“We view this one as a practice session for the county show,” Sharber said, referring to this weekend’s local show.

“It’s a kind of tune up for the major show.”

The local EC show is expected to have nearly 40 students taking part by showing a handful of calves and sheep, around 18 goats and a whopping 80 pigs.

Earlier in the day the Elmore City-Pernell Ag Booster Club will provide a lunch at noon, along with a cake auction fundraiser at 1 p.m.

Such entries as cakes, pies, cookies and breads for the baked goods contest are needed in the ag classroom by 9 a.m.

Judging is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. in both the junior division for 18 years and younger and senior division for 19 and up.

The show is sponsored by SPL Control, Dill Oil Co., Cash-n-Carry, Chance Oil and Chapman Angus Ranch.

Little Miss Stockshow sponsors include PVNB Elmore City Branch and 1st State Bank of Elmore City.

The local livestock show for PV and Whitebead students comes on Feb. 23 at the county fair barns in Pauls Valley.

That will be followed by the 76th annual Garvin County Junior Livestock Show offered up the week of Monday, Feb. 25 and continuing daily through March 2 at the county fairgrounds.

The event’s schedule includes a goat show starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26 and a sheep show at 2 p.m. that same day.

Gilt judging is set to begin at 8 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 followed by a barrow show.

A cattle show begins at 9 a.m. Friday, March 1, while a cattle fitting contest has a noon start. An exhibitor’s dance will get going at 7 p.m. that night.

A free barbecue lunch is at noon Saturday, March 2 followed by a traditional premium sale at 1 p.m.
