Murder case moves to trial stage next

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — A court hearing has offered a few more details in a grisly shooting death last summer that resulted in the victim’s body being dismembered and an Elmore City man now facing a murder charge.

A handful of witnesses took the stand in a Garvin County District courtroom on Thursday to answer questions in the case against 31-year-old Justin Hammer.

Hammer faces a formal charge of first-degree murder with deliberate intent for killing Brandon Duran on the night of Aug. 7, 2012 at Hammer’s rural residence northeast of Elmore City.

Testimony shows Hammer told authorities after his arrest he did use a shotgun to shoot Duran in the face before he then used a saw to dismember the body and attempt to dispose of it all at the bottom of a farm pond.

After the preliminary hearing Hammer was bound over to face a jury in the future.

A trial date is expected to be set during a formal arraignment now scheduled for April 26.
