Relay effort at the starting line

bporterfield@pvdemocrat.com — It appears that Garvin County’s annual Relay For Life effort is off and running as some folks are already at the starting line.

First up is a bake sale this week followed by plans for an actual run also meant to raise money for the big Relay event again coming in early summer.

The fundraiser this week is a bake sale hosted by First United Bank in Pauls Valley, located at 315 West Grant.

The local bank will host the event from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, March 22 with proceeds benefiting the Relay.

With plenty of other Relay related events on the way over the next several weeks, one is a “Hauling for a Cure” 5K run and walk during the Footloose Festival in Elmore City on April 20.

Ginger Beck of Wynnewood, one of the area residents leading the charge for this year’s Garvin County Relay For Life coming to Pauls Valley this summer, said the Pink Ladies Relay team is hosting the fundraiser.

Cash prizes are planned for the winners and those who pre-register by April 1 are guaranteed to get an event T-shirt. Call Amanda Winkler at 405-207-8622 for more.

Beck says these are the first of many related events on the way before this year’s Relay on June 7-8 at Pauls Valley’s football stadium in Wacker Park.

Different teams are also starting to come together in anticipation of the Relay campaign.

“We’re still in the process of getting teams formed,” Beck said.

“We’re trying to get more teams registered, and we’re fixing to start hitting it door to door for donations,” she said.

“People need to remember all the proceeds will again go to the American Cancer Society.”

She added the hope is also to get some new attractions this year when the teams gather for the June Relay.

Also getting started are regular Relay committee meetings, which are at 6 p.m. the third Tuesday of the month at the senior citizen center in Pauls Valley.

“Anybody who wants to be involved in Relay For Life is encouraged to come to the meetings,” Beck added.

A Call for Donations

Helping spread the word in as many places as possible Tuesday morning, Pauls Valley resident Kalista Basaldua puts up Main Street Pauls Valley posters listing items needed for those impacted by Monday’s tornado in the Moore area. Since word started spreading, the response has been overwhelmingly positive with several truck loads dropped off at a distribution point in Norman.
