Lindsay goes to OT, beats Plainview

marie@pvdemocrat.com — It’s been 24 years since the Lindsay Leopardettes have been to the state tournament and this will be their first appearance as a five-on-five team.

It took the Leopardettes an extra period Saturday to knock off a tough Plainview squad but after falling behind Lindsay rattled off an 11-3 run for a 56-50 win.

It was a classic battle between the two ranked teams. Plainview would build a lead and Lindsay would come back and build a lead of their own.

Plainview had the first run of the game as four of the five Lady Indian starters scored and took a 12-6 lead. Lindsay cut the lead to 4 on a basket at buzzer.

The sparked the Leopardettes in the second as five Lindsay players scored at least one basket to give LHS a 23-20 lead.

Morgan Moore had 5 big points in the quarter to lead the Leopardettes to the half time lead.

Megan Shelton sparked the Lady Indians at the start of the second half with 7 points and Hayden Hunt added 5 as Plainview regained the lead at 34-32.

Hunt kept the pressure on the Leopardettes as she hit three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.

The Leopardettes countered with a balance of scoring led by Whitney Metker who had five in the quarter. Missed free throws cost both teams a chance to win in regulation but the Leopardettes did tie the game and played good defense to stop Plainview in regulation, sending the game into overtime.

In overtime, Plainview struck first with a basket but it was all Lindsay after that. The Leopardettes didn’t let the charity stripe keep them from the win in overtime. Lindsay was 7-of-7 from the line in overtime and they put the game away with a 6-point win.

The Leopardettes advance to state where they now face the No. 1 team in the state and the undefeated Sulphur Lady Bulldogs. Tip off of the game is at 7 p.m. Thursday at the State Fair Arena.
